  • Who is Ms Marvel? Comic origin, Powers & Abilities, Weaknesses, History and Future in MCU

Kamala Khan a.k.a Ms Marvel was Marvel’s first Muslim Superhero to get a solo comic book series. She is a Pakistani-American teenager whose parents moved from Karachi, Pakistan to New Jersey, USA. She had Inhuman genes and got Polymorphic Superpowers after undergoing Terrigenesis on being blanketed by the Terrigen Mist accidentally. She made her Marvel comics debut back in the year August 2013 with Captain Marvel #14. Her powers include shapeshifting, stretching and accelerated healing.

Ms Marvel is set to make her MCU debut soon on 8th June 2022 with her namesake Disney+ series and it is thus important that we know about her comic-book root. In this article, we shall be talking about Ms Marvel’s origin, history, powers & abilities and weaknesses. We shall also discuss her possible future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ms Marvel: Origin Story and History

Kamala Khan was born to Muslim parents Yusuf Khan and Muneeba Khan who relocated from Pakistan’s old capital city Karachi to United States’ New Jersey.

Kamala was a typical brown girl and was very nerdy. She loved social media, video games and especially Superhero comic books. Iron Man, Captain America and Captain Marvel were her favourite superheroes but she loved Carol Danvers (who had recently given up the Ms Marvel mantle to be called Captain Marvel) the most.

Due to these reasons (her nerdiness), Kamala was often bullied at school and she felt like an outsider. She had only two best friends – Bruno and Nakia.

However, one day she had had enough of being ridiculed for how strict her parents were and she broke out of her house to go to a party at a friend’s house near Jersey Waterfront. She met Zoe Zimmer (one of her bullies) and her boyfriend Josh there and they started making fun of her again. Being fed up with their taunts, she decided to leave the party and return back home.

However, just when she was on her way home, the city of the jersey was blanketed by Terrigen Mist and Kamala herself got covered by it and she became unconscious. In her dream, she saw Captain Marvel, Iron Man and Captain America. They scolded her for being so indisciplined and asked him what she wanted in life. She answered that she wanted to be just like Captain Marvel.

Just then, she got back her consciousness and she realised that she had been turned into a young Ms Marvel version of Carol Danvers.

In reality, she had undergone the process of Terrignenesis which genetically mutates an Inhuman when he/she is exposed to Terrigen mist and gives him/her a unique Superhero power. As Kamala had Inhuman genes, she underwent Terrigenesis.

Kamala was confused at first but soon she realised that she had gained polymorphic superpowers which meant she could transform into anything she wanted and she could also stretch her body as far as she wanted.

Kamala went back to the Waterfront and saw that a drunk Josh had mistakenly thrown Zoe into the lake. Kamala used her powers to extend her arms, pulling Zoe Zimmer back to safety. However, the people who saw the incident were shocked by her powers and so she fled the place instantly. However, on reaching home, Kamala was grounded by her parents.

Her punishment was soon lifted by her parents and Kamala went to the convenience store to meet Bruno. However, she saw that it was being robbed and so she transformed into Ms Marvel and tried to stop the Burglars. Unfortunately, she was shot by the robber and he fled. It was then that Kamala realised that she had healing abilities as well and her wounds vanished as soon as she switched back to her normal self.

She did that and Bruno saw her real identity. Bruno also helped her to explore all her potential.

    Ms Marvel: Powers and Abilities

Ability to change size – Using her powers, Kamala can become as small as a miniature figure and as tall as a building just like Ant-Man.

Accelerated Healing – Kamala’s powers allow her to time travel on a molecular level and thus she is able to heal very fast.

Stretching Powers – Just like Mister Fantastic, Ms Marvel can stretch or elongate her body parts as much as she wants.

Shape-shifting – Just like Skrulls, Kamala can take up the appearance of anyone she sees. However, this allows her to disguise herself as an animal and a non-living thing as well.

Physical strength – Kamala can lift up a maximum of 75 tons.

    Ms Marvel: Weaknesses

Electromagnetic pulses – Ms Marvel is extremely vulnerable to EMPs and she loses a lot of her abilities on being subjected to EM pulses including the healing and elongation power.

Overuse of healing power – If Ms Marvel is deeply wounded and she uses her healing powers too much, she loses her other powers (e.g: elongation).

    Ms Marvel: Future in MCU

The character of Ms Marvel will be played by Pakistani-American actress Iman Vellani in MCU. The Disney+ MCU series ‘Ms Marvel’ is set to release on 8th June and it will be Marvel’s first solo project featuring a Muslim superhero. There is a good possibility that Ms Marvel will join MCU’s Young Avengers in the future. She will also appear in ‘The Marvels’ alongside Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau.

  • The Secret behind Ms Marvel’s Powers in MCU – REVEALED

The trailer of Marvel’s much-awaited series Ms Marvel featuring Kamala Khan has finally been released and fans are all but curious about the origin of her powers. The young Superhero seemingly has a wide range of powers but as this is her first appearance in the MCU, fans barely know anything about her. Thus in this article, we shall be talking about the real reason behind Ms Marvel’s powers.

Source of Ms Marvel’s Powers in Comicbooks

Well, to begin with, Marvel has decided to change the sources of Kamala’s powers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to Marvel Comics, Kamala Khan is unhuman and that is where she gets her superhuman abilities from. She had Inhuman lineage and was activated by the Terrigen bomb upon being exposed by the Terrigen Mist.

Source of Ms Marvel’s Powers in MCU

Marvel decided to go down a different route as far as Kamala Khan’s Superhero abilities’ origin is concerned as fans are not yet much aware of the Inhumans in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and their fate will be reviewed later. However, the prime concern right now is safeguarding the interest of the Public in Ms Marvel and thus they decided to go off the book and introduce a Bangle as the source of Ms Marvel’s true powers.

    What are Nega-Bands

The trailer of Ms Marvel shows Kamala Khan wearing a futuristic bangle and this was what gave her all those Superpowers to begin within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In Marvel comics, Nega-Bands are Kree empire artefacts that were originally given to the first Captain America, Mar-Vell. The bands passed on from one hand to another after his death before finally reaching the able hands of the current day Ms Marvel, Kamala Khan.

The Powers of Nega-Bands include Energy manipulation, flight, teleportation, Super durability and gives its owner the fat to change in between the song.

    Kamala’s powers in the MCU

In Marvel comics, Nega-bands usually come in pairs but we saw Kamala wearing only one of them in the trailer. Wearing just one band also gives the wearer powers but only partially and anyone who holds both bands can be considered to be one of the most powerful beings in the world as the Nega-bands are Omega level weapons

Probably we will be seeing Kamala searching for the other band at some point in the first season or the sequel of Ms Marvel. Currently, Kamala seems to possess the powers of Energy manipulation, shape-shifting and we will witness her discovering more of her powers in the series.

  • Ms Marvel Trailer Breakdown, Easter Eggs and Hidden Details

Marvel has finally released the trailer of their much anticipated Disney+ MCU show Ms Marvel will serve as the origin story and first official MCU appearance of the namesake Superhero. Kamala Khan, a.k.a Ms Marvel is the first Muslim superhero to get a solo series under Marvel’s label. The character of Ms Marvel is being played by 19-year old Pakistani-American actress Iman Vellani

In this article, we will be reviewing the first trailer of Ms Marvel and breakwing it down. We shal also be talking about the Easter eggs and Hidden details in the trailer (if any).

    The Comicy Intro

One thing that Marvel fans observe very keenly in every Marvel trailer is the intro or the Studio Banner. It is not unknown that Marvel designs specialised intros for each of its projects. For example, the recently released trailer of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has a Blueish purple coloured Marvel intro with a Gargantos like animation while the trailer of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse shows an animated intro.

The intro of Ms Marvel is unique in its own way. It is a half live-action half comic kind of intro. In fact, it looks like Kamala Khan is thinking about comicbooks in the first scene and then we move into the intro.

The first part of the trailer is also done in comicbook style with the caption of each character appearing in comic book clouds. However, this is ironic as the MCU version of Ms Marvel is far away from being comic-book accurate.

    Zoe Zimmer’s appearance

In Marvel’s Ms Marvel comic series, Zoe Zimmer was originally portrayed as one of the girls who bullied her in school. The girl with animated devil’s horns in the trailer is probably Zoe Zimmer and it is clearly understandable by the way she taunts her.

However, later on in the comics, Zoe also becomes one of Kamala’s best friends and one of the only people to know her identity as Ms Marvel. Although it is unclear whether we will see MCU going through that path.

Kamala is a big Avengers fan

In the first few scenes of the trailer itself, it is clear that Kamala is a big fan of the Avengers. She was drawing the superheroes in her notebook and thinking about the comicbooks in the very first scene. A few scenes later, she is seen wearing an animated Avengers T-shirt which. One of her friends points it out by saying “Kamala, another Avengers shirt”. This shows that she owns quite a few of them and is thus clearly a big Marvel nerd.

    Idolises Captain Marvel

The one Avenger that Kamala is particularly very fond of is undoubtedly Captain Marvel. She has her on all of her shirts and she also sees herself wearing a Captain Marvel uniform and jumping through the window in one of her dreams. The way she looks at the Captain Marvel Uniform also proves the fact further. In fact, her own Superhero costume fully resembles that of Captain Marvel.

    Kamala’s Fantasyland

It can be very well established from the first trailer that our youngs superhero often gets lost in her fantasy land. In fact, the word ‘Fantasy Land’ has been mentioned in the trailer twice.

She dreams about all sorts of things – From the hottest guy in the High School proposing her, to people celebrating her for being a Superhero. This probably shows to the audience that Kamala is after all just a high school student and a very young and immature girl.

    Portraying her religion and Culture

As mentioned earlier, Kamala is the first Muslim superhero to get a solo Marvel project. She is a Pakistani-American girl and that has been beautifully portrayed in the trailer with a scene where she prays in a Mosque.

A scene also shows her mother scolding her for wearing the Superhero costume which, just like every typical Brown parent does.

    The Source of her Powers

Apparently, Marvel will be changing the source of Ms Marvel’s powers in the MCU. According to Marvel comics, Kamala Khan is an inhuman which is how she gets her powers. However the trailer suggests that in the MCU, the character will derive her powers from a Bracelet kind of like DC’s Green Lantern.

    Red Dagger

Kareem a.k.a Red Dagger is an original character from Ms Marvel comic series who will be appearing in the MCU series as well. He can be seen in just one of the scenes of the trailer and fans are very excited to see this character as well.

  • How is Ms Marvel connected to Captain Marvel?

Marvel has finally released the trailer of their upcoming Disney+ MCU show ‘Ms Marvel’ which will serve as the origin story and the MCU debut of the namesake superhero. However, due to the similarities in the character’s name with another very famous character Captain Marvel, who is arguably one of the strongest superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe currently, many fans might get confused between Ms Marvel and Captain Marvel. In this article, we aim to solve this confusion once and for all.

Not only do Captain Marvel and Ms Marvel have similar names, but from what we can understand from the first trailer of Ms Marvel, they have sort similar powers too. Although in Marvel Comics the powers and abilities of the two superheroes are completely different, Marvel has apparently given her similar abilities to Carol Danvers as Ms Marvel is a huge fan of hers and it is going to be a big aspect of the series.

Kamala Khan is a Pakistani-American youngster who is a massive fan of Captain Marvel a.k.a Carol Danvers. In the first half of the trailer we are shown a figurine of Captain Marvel and the way in which Kamala looks at her, it is clear that she is a big idol and inspiration for her. Let us now take a look at the reason behind the similarity in their names.

    Marvel’s first Captain Marvel

    Mar-Vell

When Marvel comics first introduced the character of Captain Marvel, he was a male Kree military officer who was sent to earth to keep an eye on the technological advancements of Humans who were very close to discovering Space travel. The character’s name was called Mar-Vell and he later took up the title of Captain Marvel.

Gradually, Mar-Vell became too fond of the Humankind, became their protector and deserted the Kree empire. He had very similar powers to that of MCU’s Carol Danvers.

Carol Danvers – The first Ms Marvel

According to Marvel comics, Carol Danvers did not receive her powers from the Tesseract. Yes, she was an Air Force Pilot and the whole part about the explosion was true but her true powers came after her DNA fused with that of Mar-Vell and thus she got her powers directly from the Kree Superhero.

Carol soon joined the Avengers and took up the Superhero name Ms Marvel.

Taking up the Captain Marvel mantle

Marvel released ‘The Death of Captain Marvel’ comic-book series in 1982 which was centred around the after-effects of Mar-Vell’s demise. Following his death, his children Genis-Vell and Phyla-Vell took up the Captain Marvel mantle. However, everyone who took up the name either died or decided to take up a different name in the future,

It was then that Carol Denvers took up the mantle of Captain Marvel.

Kamala Khan takes up the mantle of Ms Marvel

    Kamala Khan a.k.a Ms Marvel

Marvel created the character of Kamala Khan very recently in 2014. As mentioned earlier, Kamala Khan idolised Captain Marvel from a very young age and thus on discovering her superhuman abilities, she took up the Mantle of Ms Marvel, a name which was first used by Carol Danvers, as a sense of respect towards her idol. According to rumours, Marvel is going to use this link to bring in Ms Marvel in their upcoming movie ‘The Marvels’ which will feature Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau as well.

Kamala Khan will be the first Muslim superhero to get her own solo series under the Marvel label. She has powers like shapeshifting, elasticity and more. The series will release on Disney Plus on June 8, 2022.
